IT KEEPS HAPPENING
THIS IS THE THIRD TIME. IT KEEPS DOING IT IN THE MIDDLE OF RESTORING! WHAT THE MOTHER OF LOVING SHIT FUCK DICK I'M ANGRY.
UPDATE: Now I'm restoring the default settings. If that doesn't work I have to restore the file system. If that doesn't work I have to restore the database. If that doesn't work I have to restore the HDD which I do not want to do.

I googled the error message and found this video which might help, though it's an annoying video. There are many other links from this search. You might find some help there. Good luck.

I googled it and it seems that I need to go into safe mode. If all the steps in safe mode fail, I have to restore the HDD which means deleting all the data. Now, that sucks, but at least I don't have a metric fuckton of saves on it, only a few. And I wasn't exactly super duper far in GT6 but it will be annoying to redo all the license tests

Actually, I have to commend you for a lack of OMG and LMAO and what have you, because that tends to permeate other 16-17 year olds' conversations, which I have the pleasure of dealing with at work.
Also, shit wine gets a bad rap only because you're not in college yet.

I have solved more computer/game problems on google than I can count. I figure that if I am having the problem, somebody else is bound to have had the problem too. When I worked in a computer lab in college, we had a saying: There are two kinds of computer users—those who have lost data, and those who will lose data. It's inevitable. Sounds like you've got a pretty good grip on what's going on. Good luck!

When I'm in college I'll be drinking piss water beer, thank you. I'd prefer to shit beer than shit wine. I would like to keep my wine good. The best shit is Champagne though. I had some martini brand champagne on new years this year and damn it was good.

The funny thing is that before last generation, I had never had a console die on me. I also have never had a hard drive crash on my computer, ever, and I've had the same hard drive since 2009.

any spare laptop drives lying around? I'd try dropping one in and seeing if the system will recognize/set it up. You can use the PS3 Save Data Utility to transfer all your save data over.
Is this by any chance a first gen console, or one of the newer ones?

It's a Slim. I have a hard drive from my old 360 lying around, but I'm using it as extra storage for my PC. It might delete all the data on it if I try to hook it up to the PS3

it would, don't do that.
If you had just a totally spare one, I'd say drop that in. It may be the case that something is wrong with the drive. Laptop hard drives are fairly cheap, and available at best buy even (if there's a local one around you). I hate best buy, but you gotta do what you gotta do. I'd swap the drive and make sure the console can still get itself back up and running. Save data utility is a bit of a PITA to use, but it's saved my ass (and I'm not a big gamer, so I literally have a single save file I'm concerned about on my console).
I have a first gen, so heat is a big problem with mine...when poorly kept, it could roast the life out of a drive completely...the slims don't get nearly as hot, so I wouldn't think it's a heat problem, but very possible the drive is just going bad. Because it's an OEM drive in the PS3, the drive itself has no warranty and would only be covered under the console's 1 year warranty. If you do pull the drive from the PS3, I wouldn't connect it to anything but another PS3 for the save data utility just to be safe.

I don't want to be right, but in the event of a failing drive, you should really minimize read/write access to it, so that you don't have a total failure before you can start recovering your stuff. Total PITA, I know.
I'm in North Jersey...if you were in the general area, I'd lend you gear to get you back up and running, but I feel like so few oppos are in this area..

I live way too far away for that, unfortunately. I reaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllyyy don't want my drive to be dead, so I'm trying to restore it. I know, I know, minimize read/write and all, but I just want to wake up tomorrow and see a working PS3. So that's what I'm doing, overnight.
